Sudden Cardiac Arrest or SCA is the leading cause of death today.  This happens almost 1000 times each day and can happen to anyone.  There is no stereotype of the "overweight, smoker, white male", SCA happens to men and women, young and old, and in many cases with no pre existing heart ailment.  SCA is not a heart attack, but can result from a heart attack.  

CPR alone will not save someone from an SCA, it keeps the patient alive for a time, but with out defibrillation, CPR only prolongs death.  The optimal time to defibrillation is approximately 4 minutes, and chance of survival drops 10% with every minute that passes.  Even if you have  a medical response nearby, and you witness the person go down, 1) a call needs to be made 2) EMS gets dispatched  3) they drive over and unload   4) make it to the person and start.  This process is normally a 10 minute wait.  The national survival rate is now about 5%, and EMS folks can tell you that they just can't get there quick enough.  

In areas where AED's have been implemented, survival rates are very high, because defibrillation is on hand.  AED's are very easy to use and with minimal training, conducted with CPR refresher courses, all your employees can be trained.
